Great filter at half the price, May 23, 2011 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Marumi IR 77mm 77 Filter Infrared Infra-Red 830HB 830nm 830 Japan (Electronics) I currently have a Hoya R72 filter which blocks around 700nm. I needed a larger filter as I recently bought lenses with a 77mm filter diameter. The Hoya in that size is a ridiculous price, so I wanted to try a lower cost alternative. I decided to go with the Marumi that blocks 830nm, just to try something different. On my Pentax k-7, this filter blocks pretty much all visible light with color. So you are not able to do any false color IR with this one, just B&W conversion. The B&W's it produces is better than what a 700nm produces, in my opinion. The average shutter speed in bright daylight at f/7.1 on my camera ran about 70 sec, which is also longer than what would be needed for a 700nm filter. It really makes the cloud movement look great as well as stills water to get great reflection.
I will probably also get the Marumi 700nm filter as I know I will miss the false color IR. Hopefully that works as well as this one.
I give it a 5 as it seems very well made, and... Read more

Cheaper alternative to the big names., November 10, 2011 Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Marumi IR 77mm 77 Filter Infrared Infra-Red 830HB 830nm 830 Japan (Electronics) Let me open by saying this is my first IR filter, so I have nothing to compare it to.
I bought it just before a photo-tour to Italy, tried to use it with different lenses on my D90, including 10-20mm, 18-200mm and 50mm. the results are purple tinted monochrome as expected (in contrary to the +/-700nm wavelength filters which delivers 'IR colors'), I found this filter very useful for artistic landscape photography, even though on my unmodified D90, a simple mid-day exposure using a normal f/8 aperture will take about 60-90 seconds.
The plus is a really long exposure in daylight (better then any ND filter I know), wich will enable you to get silky skies and bodies of water, and empty streets even when it's very crowded...
But this, of course, is a minus as well, because long exposures like these in turn delivers a very noisy picture with low contrast, even when using your lowest setting ISO.
Therefore I reccomend this filter only to people who know exactly what... Read more
